After a long 16 years, the
Bangladesh Nationalist Party is set to hold its fifth national council Tuesday
with a call for unity to save the country.
Re-elected chairperson of BNP Khaleda Zia will inaugurate the council at 10 am
after 16 years in the city's Bangabandhu International Convention Centre with a
slogan "Different people different paths: unity to save the country".
The council will elect a new executive committee, standing committee and
advisory committee with the possible induction of new faces with new
responsibilities, through a sort of purge in the changed political milieu. The
first council was held in 1978, second in 1983, third in 1988 and the last in
1993.
The new secretary general, the party's most important post, will be announced
in the council, according to party sources.
Meanwhile, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, convener of the publicity sub-committee,
called upon the government to ensure foolproof security for the smooth holding
of the national council.
Full-proof security measures have been made on the occasion of the council.
Members of law enforcing agencies, including police, RAB and intelligence
agencies, are working together to ensure overall security.
