Report: VOA News Related item code: 9-P Duration: 7:25 minutes Translator: Mohammed Rukon Uddin (Cox’s Bazar) Topic: Majority among the Rohingya youth are unemployed while few are able to get chances to work with some NGO at kutupalong Rohingya camp. Translation Summary: Due to extreme need only few Rohingyas are able to get job while majority remain unemployed. NGOs and INGOs recruit Rohingyas only when it is important. Volunteers mainly provide language support, geographical and psychological supports and also create networking between own communities and authorities. But the number of getting job is very minimum, said 23 years old Mohammad Shafik currently working in a project as a volunteer with BRAC. He is mainly focusing on the ground ‘Protection’ and visits door to door to collect data and provide information. He said,” I think only few Rohingyas are working for NGOs and INGOs among few hundred thousand. Payment is as same as a day laborer like 300 bdt or $3.5 USD/ day. Maximum payment is not more then $80/ month but it is not for every single month. It depends on the needs for project cause”. Shafik also mentioned about the youth girls in the camp. “Mostly youth girls are domestic following the culture. But some educated Rohingya women and youths are seen working”. Shafik on behalf of Rohingya educated youths urges relevant authorities to increase the number of vacancies for Rohingya volunteer so that educated Rohingya won’t be frustrated”.
