Translation Summary: Aung Kyaw Moe, a Rohingya, peacebuilder, humanitarian worker told VOA Rohingya Lifeline that Burma has been in a dictatorship for the last 70 years. Most of the people of Myanmar alive today did not have the authentic taste of democracy. The military has written the 2008 constitution and began the so-called democratic transition starting from 2010. From 2010 to 2021 Jan, a lot of inhumanly dirty and shameful incidents took place in Rakhine state toward Rohingya and other ethnic minorities. No country in this world can become genuine democracy if humanity is not at the center of it. Therefore, if I have to go back to a realistic political pathway to restore democracy and human right,No:1, 2008 constitution needs to be abolished. No:2, New Federal Democratic Constitution need to be established by giving equal rights to all ethnics and religious group. No.3 All necessary conditions must be created for Rohingya together with the UN, and a safe, volunteer, and dignified return should take place. When it comes to Rohingya, perceptions define reality for most of the Myanmar people. The military has been spreading propaganda such as labeling them as illegal Bengali through various channels for decades. Between Rohingya and the larger Myanmar community, there is a religious difference that has been used to create “Us vs Them” mentality. There is a lot of discriminatory law (legal restriction) imposed on Rohingya, violating fundamental human rights that create social restrictions. But I would like to tell all my fellow Rohingya to know that the revolution started by the youth last month is a fight between the people of Myanmar and the military. Therefore, as we are as well people of Myanmar and we must stand with the people of Myanmar and fulfill our duty in shaping country’s future. R2P is usually exercised in the prevention of international crimes such as Genocide. It should be politically motivated for UNSC permeant member states to come to a resolution against any military intervention.
