Guests: MR.ANWAR @ U KYAW MIN Chairperson of Democracy and Human Rights Party (DHRP) A Politically registered Party, Based in Rangoon, Myanmar Translation Summary: Anwar told VOA Rohingya Lifeline that Myanmar has been a military-led country since 1962 and does not want to hand over power to any civilian-led party. Myanmar's military does not want to transform into democracy, although the NLD won a landslide victory in the 2015 election, the military thought they would lose the 2020 election, but the NLD regained a majority, which is why the military pre-planned the coup again. To date, the military junta has killed nearly 900 civilians and detained more than 6000 in anti-coup protests. The NCA (National Ceasefire Agreement) did not take effect after the military coup, resulting in many armed groups fighting back the military junta. There are no protests against the military coup in the Rakhine state because there have been talks between the junta government and the Arakan Army and the military has handed over autonomous powers to the Arakan Army to run the Arakan state. Thus, the Rohingya will be further persecuted by the Arakan Army and the local Rakhine community due to many years of communal destruction by Rakhine Buddhists. The UNG government issued a policy on the Rohingya issue when the US Congressman asked Myanmar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Kyaw Moe Tun, but this is only a policy statement, so we cannot believe it because it could change in any situation. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ample evidence in the Rohingya genocide case after the UN fact-finding mission provided strong evidence, so hopefully, the court will punish the perpetrators of the genocide. The UNG government has not yet been recognized as a legitimate government of Burma by the international community and the United Nations except, Turkey. At the forthcoming UN General Assembly in September, the United Nations will decide whether to recognize the NUG government or the junta government. The previous government had an agreement for the Rohingya repatriation process and after the coup, General Min Aung Hlaing announced that the repatriation process would continue as per the agreement between the two countries, but we did not see the junta government taking any further steps. The United Nations has a great responsibility for the Rohingya repatriation process, but if there are any security and safety concerns in the Rakhine state, they need to be enforced by the R2P law.
