Guests: Mohammed Noor @ Maung Nu A Rohingya Activist and Political Science Student at California State University, Los Angeles. Translation Summary: Mohammed Noor, told VOA Rohingya Lifeline that during this political crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of oxygen are killing thousands of people every day in Myanmar. I, as a Rohingya activist, urge the United States and the United Nations to intervene in Burma's political crisis to rescue thousands of people in this emergency situation. I hope the United States, the most powerful country in the world, can help the people of Burma and resolve the crisis. If they do not act on emergency aid, the crisis could kill millions of people in Burma, just as people die every day. ASEAN’s policy does not have a good history of the political crisis in Myanmar. ASEAN has never supported the people of Burma during the past political crisis. So, I think ASEAN cannot solve the current political crisis in Burma because most of the ASEAN countries are run by dictators, they follow the same political policy as Myanmar. China is another key player of the ASEAN countries after Burma, so ASEAN can do nothing at the top of China’s leadership. But if the US puts pressure on ASEAN countries politically and economically, such as third-party sanctions, smart sanctions, it could be an effective way to put much more pressure on Myanmar because many ASEAN countries have invested billions of dollars in Myanmar. So, I would like to request the US government to impose third party sanctions and smart sanctions on Myanmar as they imposed on Iran and South Korea. I do not see the sincerity of the NUG government on the Rohingya issue because the government formed on their initiative did not include the Rohingya representatives. If they really need international support and recognition, they must include the Rohingya in the NUG. Report: VOA News Related item code: 9-P Duration: 06:05 minutes Reporter: Sabera Begum (Cox’s Bazar) Topic: The current situation of refugees affected by heavy rains. Translation Summary: Heavy rains are causing loss of life and property to Rohingyas in refugee camps in Cox's Bazar. Many Rohingyas have died in the landslides and thousands of Rohingya's shelters have been destroyed. Zakir Ahmed, a Rohingya from camp 8 said, NGOs and INGOs were working for rehabilitating the families affected by the heavy rains. The affected families have been shifted to learning centers where they are being assisted with clothes and food items. However, new shelters have not yet been built for the affected families, which are much needed. Zakir added that many Rohingya are still living at risk. Rohingyas at risk have been asked to leave, many are leaving their home and some are not leaving. This increases the amount of risk.
