Insurgents Kill 22 Across Iraq

A wave of insurgent attacks across Iraq killed at least 22 people and wounded 70 others on Tuesday.

Most of the deaths were near the northern town of Hawija, near Kirkuk, where three suicide bombers blew up their vehicles near Iraqi checkpoints. At least 18 people were killed.

Outside Fallujah, a mortar attack killed three Iraqis. And in Baghdad, a drive-by shooting killed a government employee.

Meanwhile the U.S. military says U.S. and Iraqi forces have detained 73 suspected terrorists in Tal Afar, near the Syrian border, over the past two weeks.

In other developments, Dubai television aired a video Tuesday purportedly showing Iraqi militants threatening to kill a Turkish hostage unless Turkey ends cooperation with the U.S. military. The video's authenticity has not yet been verified.
