Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has assured the United States of unwavering support in the war on terrorism, but says U.S. forces in Afghanistan must avoid violating Pakistani borders.
Pakistani newspapers say General Musharraf gave this message to visiting U.S. Central Command chief General John Abizaid on Tuesday. Strikes by Afghanistan-based U.S. forces killed 24 suspected militants in a Pakistani tribal region bordering Afghanistan last week.
U.S. officials say the raids were needed to squeeze the frontier region where al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden might be hiding.
Pakistani newspapers say General Musharraf told General Abizaid he wants Pakistani borders to be respected in the war on terrorism, and will not put up with future border breaches.
Pakistan's government has not commented on the newspaper reports.
