Murtha Says US Cannot Win War in Iraq

A prominent Democrat in the U.S. Congress says he believes the United States cannot win the war in Iraq because -- in his words -- "Iraqis have turned against Americans."

Congressman John Murtha responded to a speech by President Bush on Wednesday. Mr. Murtha said what is going on in Iraq today is not terrorism, but an insurgency. He said only seven percent of the fighters in Iraq are foreign fighters.

The Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania has had a distinguished military career and is widely viewed as an expert on the military. He has called for an immediate redeployment of forces in Iraq.

President Bush defended his Iraq policy in a speech today in Washington, focusing on efforts to revive Iraq's economy and rebuild its shattered infrastructure. Mr. Bush acknowledged that reconstruction has not always gone as planned, primarily because of security challenges.

But he cited progress in the cities of Najaf and Mosul, saying residents there are seeing tangible progress in their lives.
