In this edition of Hello Washington the topic of discussion was: The Method and Importance of Teaching Bangla as a Modern Foreign Language. Our panelists were Dr. Ghulam Murshid, scholar and author now residing in London and Dhriti Bagchi who teaches Bangla in the South Asian Studies Program at Rutgers University in New Jersey and also directs a Bangla school.
The listeners were interested in finding out if Bangla language is taught differently abroad, are there books available etcetera.
Dr. Murshid spoke about the different needs of different groups of learners. He pointed out that now there are easier methods available to teach Bangla.
Ms. Bagchi spoke about some of the problems teachers face when they are teaching Bangla to children or adults who are not familiar with Bangla culture.
