Abu Taher Receives First National Ethnic Media Award


Abu Taher, Executive Editor of The Weekly Bangla Patrika received the First National Ethnic Media Award in the category of women’s issues for his feature about a woman entrepreneur. New America Media gave the awards in 16 categories.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton opened the First National Ethnic Media Awards with a powerful tribute to ethnic media's role in American journalism. She said, "Ethnic media represent the way the new Washington needs to connect to the new America."

Clinton headed a cast of Washington heavyweights who participated in the event, including Washington Post Executive Editor Len Downie, FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps, District of Columbia Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and others.

Abu Taher spoke to VOA about The Weekly Bangla Patrika’s role in the community . He said it is a helpful tool for immigrants. He also spoke about the feature for which he won the award.

The Weekly Bangla Patrika is based in New York.
