Bangladesh Police Clash with Protesters for Three Straight Days

Riot police in Bangladesh used tear gas and fired rubber bullets to disperse stone-throwing protesters in the capital, Dhaka on Tuesday.

The clashes mark the third consecutive day of unrest between police and activists. Some threw small bombs. Thousands of people flooded the streets in defiance of a ban on demonstrations to protest elections set for January 22nd.

More than 200 people have been injured and scores of others arrested since the 14-party Awami League began its blockade Sunday.

The opposition coalition is boycotting the election, demanding it be postponed until the voter list is revised. Awami leaders accuse the interim government and electoral commission of rigging the polls in favor of the former ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Amir Khasru has more on the story.
