The police presented Jamuna Group chairman Nurul Islam Babul held on Thursday before a Dhaka court with a prayer for detaining him for 30 days and the court after the hearing sent him to jail. Babul, detained by plainclothesmen soon after he had come out of the Segunbagicha office of Anti-Corruption Commission after submitting his wealth statement on Thursday, was produced before the court of chief metropolitan magistrate, Dhaka on Friday afternoon amid tight security.
Babul’s counselor, Abdul Matin Khasru, submitted a bail prayer to the court of metropolitan magistrate Syed Mujibul Haque, arguing that, although there was no case against him, lawmen arrested Babul only to harass him.
Opposing the prayer for bail, the police told the court that Babul, who is also a real estate businessman, grabbed many government lands across the country and took control over a private company by force. Besides, the police accused him of conspiring with his associates to deteriorate the country’s law and order.
