US Concerned About Threats to Democracy in Nepal

A senior US official says Washington is concerned about continued Maoist violence and growing unrest by ethnic groups in Nepal.

Under Secretary for Management at the US State Department, Henrietta Fore, told reporters in Kathmandu that if the two issues are not resolved, they could threaten Nepal's progress toward democracy.

During a two-day visit, Fore met with Nepali political leaders, including Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. The US official also expressed concern about claims of an assassination plot against a US diplomat in Nepal.

The claims were made by former Maoist leader Prachanda who said earlier this week he had information about the plot and blamed the killing on the rebels.

Fore is the highest US official to visit Nepal since the government and the Maoists signed a peace accord last year. The agreement ended a decade-long Maoist insurgency that killed more than 13-thousand people.
