Advisory Council in Bangladesh Approves amended Emergency Power

The council of advisors of the caretaker government today approved amendments to the existing laws to make some more effective rules for curbing corruption, acts of violence and other serious crimes.

A regular meeting of the council, with Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed in the chair, approved the amended Emergency Powers Ordinance 2007 and the Law and Order Disrupting Crime Speedy Trial (amendment) Act 2002.

It also endorsed in principle the Anti-Corruption Commission Ordinance 2007 arming the anti-graft watchdog with powers to arrest corruption suspects and formulate necessary rules for its effective functioning. The authorities were asked to submit the draft ordinance again after examining some points.
