Indian External Affairs Minister flown to Delhi

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who was badly injured in a road accident near Kolkata late Saturday night, is stable but will be kept under observation at the Army Research and Referral (R&R) Hospital in New Delhi till Tuesday, the hospital said Sunday.

Mukherjee, 72, was brought to the Army R&R hospital with head injuries he had received in a road accident when his car was hit by a stone-laden truck at Nakshipura in Nadia district, 130 km from Kolkata. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present at Delhi airport when a special plane carrying the minister arrived and enquired about his health.

The news of Mukherjee's injury caused considerable anxiety and concern in political circles as he enjoys a pre-eminent position both in the United Progressive Alliance government and his Congress party.
