Police in Bangladesh filed formal charges of extortion Tuesday against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina's younger sister and her cousin, a former minister, have also been charged in the same case. All are accused of demanding around 435 thousand dollars from a company in return for allowing it to build a power station.
Hasina, leader of the Awami League party, was arrested last week and sent to a house converted into a prison in the capital, Dhaka, where she has been held ever since. She has denied the accusations.
