More than 50 people, including policemen, were injured in clashes between two groups of garment workers in the city's Tejgaon industrial area this morning.
Garment workers were demanding that the Eid Bonus be doubled and they should get Iftar allowance.
They attacked some of the garment factories and damages were done in atleast 21 factories, As the situation was getting out of control, the army was called in. The clash continued for about four hours and the angry demonstrators set some vehicles on fire. Local sources said the clashes started as workers of Shefal Group, a garment factory, refused to join in with Nasa Group workers in their two-day long agitation for increased Iftar allowance.
Angered, the Nasa workers attacked the Shefal factory at about 8:00am and started damaging machinery and also beat up Shefal workers, triggering a violent clash. Later, the clash spread to adjoining areas. Twelve of the injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
