4 Tamil Tigers Believed Killed in Sri Lankan Sea Battle

Sri Lanka's Defense Ministry says the country's navy has captured two boats belonging to Tamil Tiger rebels. The ministry said Thursday the navy confiscated the vessels following a sea battle in the northwestern Mannar district, in which four rebels are believed killed. Authorities say the boats contained, among other things, satellite phones and two remote-controlled toy aircraft -- one plane and one helicopter -- which officials say can be used for military purposes. Mannar and northern Jaffna peninsula have been the flash points of renewed fighting between the government and minority ethnic Tamil rebels, who have been fighting for an independent state in Sri Lanka's north and east since 1983. Nearly 70-thousand people have been killed in the fighting, including five thousand people since a ceasefire broke down last year.
