A Dhaka court on Thursday sent former BNP whip Ashraf Hossain to jail after he surrendered in a bribery case.
Ashraf, a key leader amongst the reformists in BNP, was charged with selling his duty-free luxury car to businessman Obaidul Karim. The Infiniti car was given to Haris Chowdhury, political secretary to former prime minister Khaleda Zia, as a bribe for awarding the Gulistan-Jatrabari flyover contract to Obaid’s firm, according to the case record.
The special court of Judge Azizul Haque ordered arrest for Ashraf, who along with his counsel appeared for bail. The court rejected the bail petition saying that there was no provision for bail in corruption case under emergency power rules.
