High School Student Royena Tanaz Performs Dances, Plays in Band, Volunteers at a Hospital


Royena Tanaz, a seventeen year old senior (12th grade) at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Virginia was born in Chandpur, Bangladesh. She came to New York City in 1994 with her parents and later moved to Virginia.

In New York Tanaz started taking lessons in Bangla music and dances. The dance classes were always her favorite and she completed a full course in the Kuchipudi style of dance native to South India with Guru Anil Kumar. Tanaz also participates in the school band. She plays the clarinet and the bass clarinet for the marching band and concert band at her school.

Tanaz plays several leadership roles in her band, international relations, and medicine-related extracurricular activities at school. Tanaz also has a keen interest in medicine, international relations, and environmental science. Her greatest wish is to pursue a career in medicine by becoming a doctor. She volunteers at INOVA Alexandria hospital on the weekends.
