West Bengal Legislature passed The Aliah University Bill 2007. The Bill has upgraded Calcutta Madrasah College into Aliah University.
Both Mr Partha Chatterjee, leader of the Opposition, and Mr Sudip Bandopadhyay of the Congress wanted to know why the government had dropped the name “Madrasah.” Mr Abdur Sattar, minister of state for minority affairs said that the word Aliah was an Arabic word which means “supreme” and therefore redundant after the word University was added.
