Stefan Frowein, the top European Union
representative in Dhaka, said on Sunday that the state of emergency was a
'problematic point' and urged the government to take certain measures to
guarantee the freedom of voters that was necessary for free and fair elections.
The state of emergency is a problematic point and some people say it has to be lifted and some others say it has to be relaxed', said Frowein, the ambassador and head of the delegation of the European Commission, after talks with foreign affairs advisor Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury.
The issue of possible sending of an
election exploratory mission for the country's next general elections was at
the center of the hour-long discussion between Iftekhar and Frowein at the
foreign ministry.
The EC
ambassador told reporters after the meeting that he had conveyed to the advisor
some points of the EU exploratory mission's report on election observation in Bangladesh.
