Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been
released from prison on bail, after being detained for a year on corruption
charges.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader left jail today on Thursday
and visited the grave of her slain husband, former President Ziaur Rahman.
Ms. Zia also met with her ailing son, Tareque Rahman, at a hospital in the
country's capital, Dhaka.
Ms. Zia told supporters today the BNP will join talks with the military-backed
interim government, and participate in national elections set for December. The
party had previously said it would boycott the poll.
Lawyers for the former prime minister say she will remain in Bangladesh. A high
court paroled Ms. Zia for three months, but on Wednesday, Bangladesh's
Anti-Corruption Commission said it would appeal the ruling with the Supreme
Court.
