Playwright Bratya Basu Speaks to VOA About His Plays and Films


Bratya Basu is a popular playwright and film maker in India.

As a young playwright, Basu authored Ashaleen, a play that’s still considered as one of the first post-modern works of Bengali theatre.

Some of the popular plays of Bratya Basu are Hemlat, The Prince of Garan Hata, Darjiparar Marjinara, Aranyadeb, Sahar Yaar and Chatushkon.

Bratya also enjoys directing films. His first film was Raasta and it was about lost innocence. His recent endeavour Teesta is about a woman who falls in love with a younger man and how the experience turns nasty.

Bratya Basu is now touring North America at the invitation of US cultural bureau. He is representing West Bengal in cultural conferences held in different cities.
