Burma Rejects Bangladesh's Demands to Stop Energy Exploration


Burma says it will not stop exploring for oil and gas in disputed waters of the Bay of Bengal, despite Bangladesh's claims that Burma has pulled out of the area.

Burmese television broadcast a government statement today, Thursday saying it was unlawful and wrong for Dhaka to demand Burma to stop working. Burma says it is respecting international law.

Earlier today, Thursday, the Bangladeshi foreign minister, Iftekhar Choudhury said Burmese ships had stopped their activities.Warships from both countries have faced off in the Bay of Bengal for the past four days, after Burmese ships escorted by naval craft began exploring the area. Dhaka says it will do everything necessary to protect its sovereignty, but is calling for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
