Police: Tainted Liquor Kills 19 in Eastern India

Police in India say at least 19 people have died in the eastern city of Kolkata after drinking tainted, illegally produced liquor.

Authorities today (Monday) said the victims are mostly poor laborers who bought the liquor in the city's slums (in Kidderpore district). They said 19 victims died between Saturday and today (Monday).

A senior police official says police have raided a number of illegal liquor outlets in Kolkata and detained at least five people.

In May of last year, more than 150 people died from contaminated liquor in southern India (in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu states).

At that time, as well, the victims were mostly poor laborers.

Our Kolkata Stringer Paramashish Ghosh Roy has more on it.
