A Bengali Cultural Activist in New York Nini Wahed Speaks to VOA Bangla Service

Nini Wahed is the Principal of Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts, BIPA. Before she came to the USA in 1993, she was a journalist in Bangladesh. She had been journalist there for about twenty two years. She has been working at BIPA for nearly sixteen years. In this exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service she talks about this cultural organization to which she is entirely committed and comments on the recent BDR tragedy in Bangladesh.

She says that along with other cultural organizations in New York , BIPA too is encouraging the new generation to understand their roots through Bengali cultural activities .

She says that on the hand a group of working Bengalis are very busy earning their breads and really they don’t have enough time to devote themselves to cultural activities , on the other, there are a lot of educated and well to do Bengalis too who arrived long time ago but have not been able to adjust themselves with the new situation. But she says that it has been encouraging to note that Bengladeshis in New York have begun to realize that their children should try and reach the roots.

She says that the tragic killings within the premises of BDR Headquarters in Dhaka have terribly shocked everyone. But she urges all concerned to be united as a nation instead of blaming one another.
