Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday sought cooperation of the media in
strengthening the base of democracy and ensuring its unhindered march.
She was holding a discussion with the country's newspaper editors and the
electronic media's chiefs at the Prime Minister's Office.
She
said the present government's main goal was to achieve the people's economic
emancipation through democracy without which the country's "smooth and
sustainable development is not possible".
She
said in the meeting that before the nation, they have put forward a specific
vision of building up a modern and prosperous Bangladesh by 2021. But without
democracy smooth and sustainable development is not possible. Media can ensure
uninterrupted journey of democracy.
As the media personalities greeted the PM on the Awami League-led grand alliance's landside victory in the December 29 parliamentary polls, Hasina said the massive win has vested in the government a substantial responsibility to work for the people.
The
editors lauded Sheikh Hasina for the way she handled the situation and restored
peace in the country in the shortest possible time after the BDR crisis.
The media chiefs unanimously noted that the wisdom and farsightedness shown by
the PM in tackling the crisis "is rare in the world".
They expressed condolence at the death of the army officers and civilians in
the Peelkhana killings and prayed for salvation of the departed souls.
