Demonstrators in London protesting against the G-20 summit smashed windows and briefly entered a Royal Bank of Scotland branch Wednesday before riot police pushed them back.
Protesters also tried to storm the Bank of England, where windows were covered with plywood in anticipation of violence. Police also kept crowds from marching on the London Stock Exchange.
Most of the demonstrations were centered in the City of London, the British capital's financial district.Television pictures showed a demonstrator with blood pouring down his face.Police also say a man collapsed and died during a march. They did not give a cause of death. Organizers called their action a "Financial Fools Day" protest. Some wore jesters' hats while others looked more menacing with black masks over their faces.
Reporter Tom Rivers told VOA the marchers appeared to be a mix of anarchists, anti-capitalists and environmentalists.
