With violence anticipated during election and terror threat looming large, the Election Commission is considering insurance cover for 60 million voters in sensitive booths spread across 152 Lok Sabha constituencies.
The EC is negotiating with public sector insurance firms. Sources said New India Assurance has emerged the frontrunner.
This is the first time the EC is
going to bring voters under insurance cover. So far, only poll personnel have
had insurance coverage. If it materializes, this could be the single-biggest
insurance policy going by the number of people covered.
EC officials said they looking at a personal accident benefit scheme along with
terror cover for voters in sensitive areas.
