Hello Washington:  The Fifteenth Parliamentary Election in India

The topic of today's Hello Washington was India’s 15th Lok Sabha (Parliament) Election.

India’s 15th parliament or Lok Sabha election begins on April 16 and will run in five phases and will end on 13th May, 2009.

With more than a billion people, India is the largest democracy of the world where in spite of many apparent difficulties, democracy is deeply rooted. This election is important and interesting because no major party can hope for forming a one-party government, instead, all the parties are secretly calculating a post election alliance and coalition with other parties. Moreover, this is the first election in India where the two major – ruling and opposition parties declared their candidates for future prime minister – even before the election. The field of election is full of candidates from all major all-India parties to regional and state-based parties. Now, everything depends on the 714 million voters, among them more than one fourth are young people.
