US Suggests Bangladesh, India Hold Dialogue About Tipaimukh Dam

US Ambassador James F. Moriarty has suggested that Bangladesh holds dialogue with India to settle the dispute over construction of the controversial Tipaimukh dam in India. He ruled out any possiblilty of US mediation to resolve the water disputes in the South Asian region as there is no particular stake for the US in the matter.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh minister for water resources said that Bangladesh is expecting to sign a treaty for sharing of eight more rivers with India.

Construction of the Tipaimukh dam for a hydroelectric plant is widely feared to cause future damage to ecosystems and limit river access in Bangladesh. The Barak River, which runs through both India and Bangladesh, carries seven to eight percent of Bangladesh’s water supply.

Amir Khasru has the details in his report.
