Bangladesh's Opposition Urges India to Cancel Dam

Bangladesh's main opposition party is calling on India to cancel plans to build a dam on a common river, saying the project will harm the environment of both countries.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief and former Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia also said she would work with the ruling Awami League to block plans for the Tipaimukh dam on the Barak River. The river flows from northeast India into neighboring Bangladesh.

Zia urged the Bangladesh government to not concede to India on the issue.

Earlier this week, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that he would make sure the dam did not hurt Bangladesh. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Egypt.
