Earlier Sunday, Mitchell held talks with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak in Tel Aviv. Barak said Israelis are ready to make whatever reasonable efforts are necessary to reach a regional peace agreement.

Before his meeting with Ehud Barak Mitchell held talks in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Mitchell said he had a "very candid and positive" conversation in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. He said a "near-term goal" is resuming negotiations between Syria and Israel.
