Bangladesh Supreme Court Rejects Military Trials for Mutineers

Bangladesh's Supreme Court has ruled that border guards who are charged with killing more than 70 people, mostly army officers, during a two-day rebellion in February should not be tried in military courts.

The country's Law Minister Shafiq Ahmed told reporters in Dhaka Sunday that the Supreme Court, responding to a request by President Zillur Rahman, has given its opinion against trying the mutineers under military laws.

Ahmed said the Supreme Court formed its opinion after several days of hearings with top lawyers and legal experts. The government said it would review the court recommendation.

Authorities have arrested more than 1,800 border guards for involvement in the mutiny that began on February 25 at the Bangladesh Rifles headquarters in Dhaka.
