Motorcycle Blast Kills 16 in Afghanistan


Afghan police say at least 16 people have been killed in a suicide bombing, while a powerful former warlord has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.

The attacks occurred Friday, just one day after Hamid Karzai was sworn in for a second term as president. Police say a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle blew himself up in a busy area in southwestern Farah province.

The provincial governor, Rohullah Amin says several children are among those killed in the blast, which occurred not far from his compound.

Investigators say dozens of people were wounded in the attack. Meanwhile, Afghan police say a remote-controlled bomb exploded near a convoy for parliament member Abdul Rab Rasoud Sayyaf as the convoy travelled near Kabul.

Five bodyguards for the former warlord were killed.Sayyat was a Mujahedeen leader who fought against the Taliban in the mid-1990's.
