The government on Wednesday
unveiled a Tk 1,000 crore stimulus package, the second in a calendar year, to
help the country’s sectors overcome negative effects of the global recession.
Following a slide in the country’s export earnings in the
first quarter, the finance minister, AMA Muhith, made the announcement, in an
apparent bid to raise the confidence level of the exporters.
The government provided the export sectors with financial and
fiscal incentives worth Tk 3,424 crore in the first stimulus package announced
in April, the fag end of the previous fiscal year.
The latest stimulus package has been announced in line with
the recommendations by a sub-committee of the taskforce on addressing
challenges arising out of the recession.
This package, valid for a period between November 1, 2009 and
June 30, 2010, would be adjusted with Tk 5,046 crore earmarked in the current
budget to provide incentives.
