In an exclusive interview with VOA, Advocate Sultana Kamal analyzes the progress that Bangladesh has made regarding women’s rights and advancement of women.
Sultana Kamal believes that Bangladesh has witnessed much progress for women. Women now have strong representation in the government which gives motivation to women from all walks of life. Women are excelling in various fields, such as education, business, and industrial work.
Yet, she says sexual inequality still exists in our society along with class boundaries. Many women still suffer from domestic violence and the government is yet to take strong action to combat this. A large proportion of Bangladeshis still hold on to patriarchal notions. Sometimes, even the people who believe in women’s rights are not able to overcome their own gender bias.
Advocate Sultana Kamal is a leading human rights activist advocating to protect the rights of women and children. She was an advisor during the governance of the caretaker government in Bangladesh.
