Ambassador Salma Khan Analyzes Status of Women

In an exclusive interview with VOA, Ambassador Salma Khan spoke about the current United Nations session on the status of women 15 years after the Beijing Women's Conference (1995). She also analyzed the status of women in her native country Bangladesh and focused on the condition of female garment workers.

In Bangladesh, 80 percent of employees working in the garment industries are women. Salma Khan said the government of Bangladesh should ensure that all the rules and regulations are followed at the garment industries and female workers are not forced to work overtime or work without receiving proper wages in return.

Ambassador Salma Khan is the chairperson of the NGO Coalition on Beijing Plus Five and the former chairperson of UN CEDAW (UN Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women).
