From midnight on Monday, 1000 coal mine workers in Barapukuria coal field began an indefinite strike demanding a pay rise.
Last month, a strike of the similar nature took place but was called off after two days when the authorities assured them that their demands will be met. Robiul Islam, the President of Barapukuria Coal Mine Workers’ Union said that the workers decided to begin another strike because the authorities have broken their promise to raise the salaries by the 20th of March.
The workers attended talks with the Chinese contractor XMC and Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd but the discussions did not yield results.
