Bangladesh Law minister Shafique Ahmed told reporters that the government is holding the trial of war criminals to establish rule of law, not out of political vengeance. He confirmed that the recently established war crimes tribunals relating to offences committed during 1971 will follow "international standards".
On Thursday, the United Nations offered assistance to Bangladesh to conduct the war crimes trial in the most effective way. Observers will be sent to witness the trial as requested by Bangladesh. They hope that the trial will be transparent and internationally acceptable.
