On Tuesday, private television Channel 1 went off the air due to charges of non-compliance of regulations.
The chief of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission said that they have shut down broadcasting activities of Channel 1 in the evening. BTRC chairman Zia Ahmed said that the private television channel has violated the telecoms act. The channel received its broadcasting equipment through bank financing. The equipment were auctioned because it failed to pay. The channel handed over their equipment to another entity, which is not allowed under the telecoms act.
Mazidul Islam, the director of the private television operator denied the charges by BTRC and claimed that it had answered all of BTRC's show cause notices. Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of BNP, the main opposition party also criticized the decision of the government to stop Channel 1. She demanded that it be restarted promptly.
