On Wednesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposed the formation of a South Asian Inter-governmental Forum to be called the Himalayan Council against the backdrop of a growing exposure of the region to climate change phenomenon as the 16th summit of the eight-nation grouping of SAARC began there.
"Global warming and climate change have already impacted our nations with melting of the Himalayan glaciers, rising sea level, erratic precipitation, land degradation, desertification and salinity," she said.<!-- IMAGE -->
The Bangladesh Prime Minister made the proposal at the plenary session of the 16th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) that began at the capital of the Himalayan Kingdom coinciding with the forum's 25th founding anniversary.
Other heads of governments and states from SAARC countries spoke in the inauguration session.
