New government figures show India's greenhouse gas emissions jumped nearly 60 percent between 1994 and 2007, making the country one of the world's largest polluters.
Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh released the report Tuesday, noting that despite the increase, the carbon dioxide emissions of the United States and China were almost four times that of India in 2007.
Ramesh said the cement production, electricity generation and transport sectors showed the most significant annual growth in emissions.
India still obtains most of its electricity from coal-fired power stations.
The country has pledged to reduce its carbon intensity by 20 to 25 percent by 2020 compared to 2005 levels. Carbon intensity is the amount of carbon by weight emitted per unit of energy consumed.
