Bangladesh - India Flag Meeting Held - 2002-11-17


A flag meeting , at battalion level, between Bangladesh and India was held at Satkhira border after Friday nights fierce exchanges of fire.Khulna Sector Commander Col. Anwar Ibne Noor led the four-member BDR team at the meeting, held in Bangladesh territory near Noabdi canal under Koikhali. Deputy Inspector General of the BSF Sanjit Singh led the other side.

At the meeting, the BDR strongly protested Friday's unprovoked attack on two BDR border outposts by the BSF and served it with a damage list. India agreed to suspend construction of a jetty on the international river Kalindi .

On Friday night, the Indians backed by the BSF started constructing the jetty. When the BDR objected to the construction. A group of BSF men fired hundreds of gunshots at the Koikhali Border outpost at the Shamnagar Thana at about 11:00pm on Friday night, a BDR official said. The firing again started at 7:00am on saturday morning. The BDR retaliated both the attacks.

The situation along the 238-km border with India at Satkhira was tense and many villagers fled homes fearing further escalation of attack.
