Bangladesh Foreign Minister Goes to Burma - 2002-11-19


Foreign Minister of Bangladesh , M Morshed Khan begins on Wednesday a three day visit to the neighboring Burma . During his visit he is expected to meet the Foreign Minister of Burma and the Head of the Burmese State.

Amongst other matters he is expected to discuss the repatriation of nearly 21,000 Burmese Rohinga refugees. These refugees have been living in Bangladesh since nearly a decade ago and are being repatriated at a very slow pace. In 1990 nearly 250,000 Rohinga refugees crossed the Burmese border and came into Bangladesh. Most of them have gone back but as UNCHR says the ones still there are living in a miserable situation.

Foreign Minister Khan is also expected to discuss bilateral issues , like trade and economy , with the Burmese leaders.
