Reuters news agency has retracted several stories it issued last week on bombings in Bangladesh, citing concerns over the accuracy of quotes from a top Banglaeshi official.
The London-based agency said today (Thursday) it can no longer vouch for the accuracy of remarks attributed to Interior Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury.
In all, five stories from Reuters had quoted the minister as saying the attacks could be the work of terrorists from Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network. But Mr. Hossain denied making the remark, leading Reuters to withdraw the stories.
The four bombings in the town of Mymensingh last Saturday killed 17 people and wounded 200 others. Bangladeshi police arrested 21 people the following day. No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts.
