50 fishermen drowned in the Bay of Bengal - 2003-06-26

A newspaper in Bangladesh says more than 50 fishermen have drowned in monsoon storms in the Bay of Bengal.

The deaths were reported in today's (Thursday's) Ittefaq newspaper, in an interview with a surviving fisherman who was rescued and hospitalized after clinging to a life raft for two days.

The heavy rains in Bangladesh have also triggered deadly flash flooding and mudslides that have killed at least 22 people.

Densely populated Bangladesh has been hit by several monsoon storms during the past week, after a searing pre-monsoon heatwave killed more than 60 people in late May and early June.
