The death toll from a powerful storm that swept through a northern part of Bangladesh Wednesday night has risen to at least 53 people. Local officials say the storm -- accompanied by torrential rain and high winds --also injured some 12-hundred people and left thousands homeless. The officials say the storm hit a wide area north of the capital, Dhaka, leaving a trail of destruction. Rescue workers were digging through piles of debris, where many people are feared trapped in collapsed houses and under uprooted trees. They also were searching rice paddies for missing villagers. Police say local hospitals treated hundreds of people for injuries caused mostly by flying debris. Some are said to be in serious condition.
